Here it comes, 'The wet tropics Cairns' has started.
It's such a beautiful season to walk through rainforest - feel the air, the ground, the plants are nourishing.
How are you feeling?
Do you feel fresh and happy?
Or are you feeling bit down and tired-like feeling?
It may be the weather.. or not!
From naturopathic point of view, I really want to emphasise the necessity of vitamin D in this season. Do you think you get sunshine most of days? or do you work in the office all day?
According to Osteoporosis Australia (2017), it is said that over 30% of Australian adults are having a mild to moderate vitamin D deficiency.
Vitamin D is one of micronutrient that supports our body function such as thyroid function, blood clotting, muscle function and so on. Vitamin D also supports growth and maintenance of skeleton as well as regulating calcium level in your body.
If you are experiencing bone and joint pain, insomnia, diarrhoea, or simply feeling fatigued but don't know why - you may want to check your vitamin D level.
In this wet season (or if you are working in the office all day), let's make sure we can keep good level of vitamin D!
How? - "you are what you eat"
Food sources are here
- eggs
- fatty salt water fish (Salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines)
- Shiitake mushroom
- Oysters
And try to get direct sunshine - only few minutes is enough in Cairns!
Getting enough sunshine and eating these food, but still not having vitamin D or feeling not right?
Our next blog will talk bit more about how our body takes vitamin D from food and convert to a 'usable form' of vitamin D.
